Blogs and Websites of Note (reference, humour, information)

Well, it is obvious that i love plants, and since the internet is a source of good information, i bookmarked blogs here, whether it is funny, useful, or just for some good reference.

1. Shirley, http://edenmakersblog.com/ - LA, Calif, USA base gardener. Her videos are short and simple.

2. http://plantsarethestrangestpeople.blogspot.com/2012/01/list-patsp-all-stars.html,
PATSP - Iowa City, Iowa, USA - indoor plants and its humor at best. Very good evaluation of houseplants.
3. Ann's Hosta Gallery - I have not known anyone who has the nicest, and greatest Hosta Collection in Ottawa, except Ann. Very lovely hosta, check it out yourself.
4. Hosta Library - extensive pictures and description of hosta in your collection.

5. Hosta Registrar - registration and details of every hosta you can find on the planet.

6. I stumbled upon this website looking for names of plants I found in the Philippines.

Seed Propagation: Rosemary officianalis

Picture 5. Rosemary seeds sprouting and showing signs of growth. Taken 10 days after sowing.

Picture 4. Covered seeds to put under light in the basement. No heat mat, just light.

Picture 3. Soil mix with seeds on top. And Cinnamon. Ask me why if you don't know what is the cinnamon for.

Picture 1. Rosemary seed packet.

Seed propagation: rosemary officinalis (February 04, 2012)

This is my first attempt at propagating rosemary. Yes, I googled how others do it to add my confusion. Many said its slow germinating, and i am better off buying a plant. Well, $2.00 is all I got, hence the packet seeds (picture 1).

I put the seeds in the paper towel, spray a little bit of water(Picture 2), fold it in half and seal it in the zip lock bag. I recall that water moisture will seep on the seeds, and it will swell, then it will aid germination. (Sterns: Introductory Plant Biology). So, it was done.

The next day, I opened the seeds, it is so sticky. NO NO NO, nobody told me it will stick to the paper towel and how I am suppose to pick it up?
Well, textbook was right again. Seeds swell, those the water seep in it, hence this one is ready for sowing. Now the tricky part is to transfer seeds to the soil medium. The seed coat is sticky. Why did I not read the book twice? Taking the seeds out of the paper towel is a mess. I tried spraying it with water with no success.
So, I scrape off few, and did not cover it will soil. spray it to moist, not soggy. It it looks mudcake, toss it off. Don't think it will work and dry off, it will not!

Those that stayed on the paper towel, duh! I covered the paper towel with soil, and said something like "you germinate seeds if you like, okay, I tried my best already".

My soil mix is not sterile - probably left over indoor potting soil with perlite & vermaculite.

To prevent damped off, I put cinnamon(picture 3). This one is not in the textbook, one of those random online article told me cinnamon prevents damped off. So, yeah...why not?

The container was a salad clam shell, transparent, so I just slit some holes in it using a knife.
I sealed it tight, and bring her down to the basement(picture 4)

The seed packet says:
Germination 7-28 days, maturity at 85 days.

Having said that, then an update soon. :)

Update: February 10. 2012 FRI. (5 days after sowing) . Baby rosemary has germinated. I counted 5 of them.
So, these seeds will germinate without heat pad, just decent flourescent light in the basement.

Update: February 15, 2012 WED (ten days after sowing). Finally, taken picture of baby rosemary. There is about more than 10 of them. Looks like they are starting to show growth (picture 5).

Ginger Propagation

Picture 3. The ginger rhizome with white buds, covered with milk bag. She is then put under lights to photosynthesize for leaf and root formation.

Picture 2. A ginger rhizome showing little white buds, breaking to become first set of leaves. Note: there is not root formation yet.
(This ginger was inside the lunchbox covered from Jan 10, 2012 to February 1, 2012)

Picture 1. A lunchbox of Ginger Rhizome: started in Jan 10, 2012

Propagating Ginger officinale Indoors: (No, it is not easy!)

This is my 2nd attempt at ginger propagation, the first one turns out into a mush in one week. How did I do that?

1. I cut a small chunk of grocery store ginger,
2. prepare a sterile soil mix, and
3. put it in a put of well draining soil medium.
4. Pot has holes in the bottom for drainage.
5. put the small ginger in the middle and I covered the ginger with soil. Mist the ginger to moisten the soil.
6. Covered it will plastic for humidity, put it in the window sill.

Okay, and the result was MUSH, Stinky ginger.

So, I said, enough about ginger, I will wait for a warm sunny day and toss a ginger in the garden just like last year.
Everything I did was exactly what you can find online, including the sterile soil.

So, back to basics, I went back to my bookshelf and there she is waiting for me to read the textbook (1) : Asexual propagation of rhizomatous plants - (cloning your plant). While not specific to ginger, propagation of rhizome indoors is a two step process, as oppose to tossing a ginger in between your flower beds outdoors and saying good luck - and yes, it did work last gardening season 2011. My ginger just grow in between Petunia and marigold patch.
However, indoors is a different one because a specific humidity is needed to initiate axilliary bud formation - that bud I am referring to is that small bump that will soon become the growing point of your ginger.

So, here is what i did for the 2nd time, and it seemed to show me positive result.

Materials:
1. Chunk of ginger from the store, about 2 inches in length.
2. Soil - i use potting mix this time, who cares? I ran out of sterile ones.
3. The pot is a 3 inch X 6 inch lunch box with a lid, that seal it tight.
4. Light - this time, I put it inside the cupboard, means zero light.

STEP 1 of the propagation process:

1. I poured soil on the lunch box and moistened it. Don't make a dough, just a little sprinkle of water.
2. I put the chunk of ginger on top of the soil.
3. I sealed the lunchbox, and put it in the cupboard. [SEE Picture 1 (above)]
Put the date: Jan 10, 2012. Each weekend, I opened the lunchbox to let the rhizome breath.
4. On Feb 1, 2012 - I opened the lunch box and found the small white buds. There are no roots yet, but these buds need photosynthesis to form leaves.
5. I remove the cover and let it breath.

STEP 2 of the propagation process:

from 5 of Step 1

1. I the cut a plastic milk bag, and punch some holes in it.
2. I covered the lunch box with the plastic milk bag, but lose enough that it can breath.
3. I bring the lunch box down, and put under light, so the white buds can form leaves.
4. Once leaf formation starts, it will also start root formation and after that, I can transfer the ginger rhizome to a bigger pot for my enjoyment as a houseplant.

Rhizomes are tricky, because if there is no air circulation, it can easily turn into mush. My reason for hiding the sealed lunch box was to keep high humidity, risking air circulation. I reasoned that if humidity is high enough, mush (formed by bacteria) cannot form in such situation. So far this one has work in my favor. (see picture 2 and picture 3)

for now...this is all folks, I will update soon, once I see leaves and roots.

Angie

Coleus Everywhere

coleus cuttings, coleus from seeds, there they are...anyone wants coleus in the ottawa area?
$2 per 4 inch pot and a thank you smile for clearing my space for next herb in season.

Houseplant: Aeschynanthus, Dizygotheca, Gollum

Jade(Crassula ovata) - but also I am wondering if this is the compacta variety. She seem to have smaller leaves than the rest of my Jade, so let's see. She is merely about 1 foot tall, so nothing really special. I just love Jades of all leaf shapes, and sizes. They seem to thrive by my neglect as CAM give them the boost for survival.

Jade Gollum or Hobbit.

Crassula ovata convoluta gollum

Now, don't ask me if she is Gollum or a Hobbit Jade. She is about 6 inches tall, because they are well...hobbit, tiny, compact. Left over from a bunch of succulents about November 2011.
She survive for about 3 months now, she is located in one of my bookshelves, so neglecting her is a habit. Maybe once a month I remember to check it out.

Castor plant (Dizygotheca). 4 inch pot.
Labeled under tropical plant. Check it out if I was right, most labels are hit and miss and so as my research.
She has been a resident of my basement since December 2011.
She survive on "watered when I remember basis".
I do my laundry every weekend, so she get's watered on this frequency with one cup of water. There is a shop light in the basement, so she gets light that way.
So far, she looks okay. I thought I would show her off now that she survive about 2 months of neglect.

Lipstick plant (Aeschynanthus).
Labeled as tropical, and it looks interesting to me. Shiny leaves. Don't know how she will stay alive, but I like her anyways. So, she comes home with me. She lives in my basement since December 2011. Thriving on about 2 months with my neglect, I think she deserves a space in my blog. I hope she remains happy along with the rest of my plants who got personality issues.

Houseplant: Fitonia, Peperomia,Pothos

What can you buy with your $50?

Hawthoria spp

Euphorbia x Iomi (red flowers from Madagascar, wonders if she get a permanent resident status in my Ottawa home? )

Echevaria spp. ( a purple one, what do you call this one now?)

Echevaria lylacina - aha! I know plant tags are 90% wrong.

Correction: Kalanchoe luciae (1) - paddle plant, paddle kalanchoe, dessert cabbage
(1) reference: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/171623/

Echevaria - spp (thick and fleshy one, anyone know the name?)

Last christmas 2011, my bff gave me $50. she said that she thinks I deserve something, just she does not know what it is. I never did know what I deserve, a manicure perhaps? So, i look around for nail polish, and they came with the groceries, so I was left with $50, still to my account.

Today, I missed my gym time, I was too late going out of the house and I end up at Home Depot. I thought, maybe I can buy myself a sledge hammer to pound the ice on my walk way.

Well, it seemed the seed shelves are out.

So, I bought 5 packets of McKenzie Seed Packets: Swiss Chard - Bright Lights, Squash-Sunburst Hybrid, Onion-Annual Bunching, Cantaloupe Delicious, & Rosemary.

Then another nice table of Succulents:

Hawthoria
Echevaria - spp
Echevaria - purple (?)
Echevaria lylacina

Grabbing a box on my way out, these succulents came home with me tonight. Only time will tell if my $50 will last another year.

The bill was $38.14, plus tax - I paid $43.10. And I got a left over of $6.90 to buy stickers, stamps and thank you card for my bff.

Scallop squash - summer squash

I notice the vine of this hybrid squash is not long and always produce a lot of fruit. Maybe few years back, there was a label that was sunburst hybrid.

I also found some post that says it is a patty pan squash because of its shape.

Indoor Garlic Propagation: (Allium sativum)

Garlic after one week, todays date: January 16, 2011 - this garlic leaves is about 6 inches tall now.

Garlic cloves (2) in a 6 inch pot, marked and dated with sowing date Jan 10. 2012

two cloves of garlic, set aside for planting in a pot
Indoor propagation of common household spice: Garlic ( Allium sativum)

I swear there is no more window in my house without plant, or every corner in my house there is a plant, if not toys. Why i keep propagating another plant, because I am a mad gardener.

While chopping garlic this morning for my eggs, I found two of these cloves has scapes - i meant that green thingy that will eventually become leaves. instead of chopping it off, and fry it, i decided to set it aside. Ahem, you know what this green thumb of mine is up to, right?

Indoor soil. i always have indoor potting soil at home, i do have houseplants, and seeds which is a hobby of mine. Do not bother using garden soil, just save yourself the trouble. I found a 6 inch pot, fill it with potting soil mixed with play sand (grit and drainage), and put down the 2 cloves.

Notice that I did not totally cover the whole of garlic with soil. Base on experience, I remember Iris varieties with large rhizomes need to breath. So, as any bulbs from the Lilium family & allium(garlic belongs here). This might not be an expert village, but i am trying to find my grove here. Once the green shots come out full steam, then root formation starts. As roots grow, this will pull the garlic down, so eventually, this garlic will be totally buried under the soil.

Water. Another factor is watering. Since this is the propagation stage, and there are no roots present yet, bottom watering the container is useless. No root tips or hairs that can absorb water. And if ever i attempt to bottom water, I will have soggy soil that will rot my garlic. Plus, indoor environment does not have decent air circulation that will dry it out. Possibility of ROT is high! (and true, it happened to me before, and it does STINK, LOL).
So, i will water from the top, maybe 1/4 cup once a week, and make sure it drained properly and increase the amount as needed.

Location: I have no more space except the shelf beside my oven. I can closely watch this garlic grow everyday, and if in case it starts to show rot, the compost bin is not that far either.

Light & Heat: The amount of light depends on when my kitchen light is on, maybe a little bit more from the window, or heat when my oven is on. I know, this ain't an ideal environment, but who else can provide one in this frigging cold winter?

So, here you go, another herb growing in my kitchen, literally. And ops, I just called my the "mad gardener". Oh well, I hope that is original.

Photos are all mine, taken from my Blackberry. and of course, that garlic is mine too, I got it from Produce Depot last Sunday.

Pelagonium - Flowering in Winter

OVERWINTERED PELARGONIUM .SPP ( FLOWERING BESIDE MY OVEN) GERANIUM

when i say i have way too much plant i mean it. They are everywhere in my home.
if i like a certain plant, it stay close to me.

This pelargonium (white) was nothing special, but i like the color anyways.
so this fall, i put few cuttings in small pot, and bring her in.

So, she is a permanent resident near my oven. I know, it is a NO NO, but who cares, I want her where I normally am, the kitchen.

And not only she survive the variable heat, she flowered on me.
While show is pearly white out there, I have a white flower just beside my oven.

Love it.

New Year 2012

new year 2012

christmas was fun, kids accumulated lots of garbage, but it makes them happy or at least laugh. The point of cutting junk to save for the children's future might be counterproductive. Let them be kids, let them have a blast opening gifts.
although, most parents tried the very best to find alternatives, this consumer base driven society is here. kids know that Johnny gets it, and know mommy has enough cash for it, so if he is good for the year, why not?
Since we discovered that we are covering our planet with trash, we started cleaning up. Not everyone, but all of humanity tried. While the Christmas trash is criticized everywhere, I sit down and wonder what grandma would think of this. Maybe she would say," let the kids be kids, give the gift now, do not wait until they do not want to play with it no more". enjoy the present and let the future be a cheerful one, because you enjoy the present. if you worry now (your present), the chances of worries carry over to the future, but if you laugh now, it will echo and bring positive energy to the future and its rulers --- yes, these kids will be our future. they will find solutions amidst challenging problems, because they can. because you teach them how to laugh with your hearts content, and live the present, and live to the fullest without hesitation.

new year...2012
it would be nice to remember 10 years from now, what i did for new year. i know, its old, boring plain housewife tale...but probably the best shot i have for life.

nite was cozy, in front of TV, with hubby opening a sparkling wine that won't pop.
So, hubby got the cork opener which blasted to his head, thank goodness it was not a life threatening moment.

watch the ball drop, sit with hubby some more, and then retire to bed.

Morning was late wake up about 8:30am, then i make "benignet". nope, not the typical philippines one, but local north american one. "sweet potato, plantain banana, barley, maple syrup & coconut milk".

hubby wake up late, just to think it is his last day of work.

i think i spend an hour with plant, doing all cleaning, and more cleaning...just like what is expected of housewife.

maybe i have the best of everything and I do not see it.

i got the greatest kids ( who would not say that?) and I got a great husband and I stay home taking care of 3 kids. Maybe i am just overwhelmed with this business of being the housecleaner day in and out, i am never use to it.

And long hours that get longer each day depending if any of the kids got constipation, teeth going on, or just naturally fuzzy.

as my husband tried to give me an hour or two break to visit a gym group fitness, it does make it feel better, that break time from demands of domestic life.

my entry is bias on what i feel on the moment and right now, my kids are acting up trying to make more mess than picking up the junk, so maybe I am just saying i only get calm when i am talking about plant, not life.

Maintaining Amaryllis Bulbs

The top of my medium size bookshelf. Left to right. Coleus rustic orange, velvet lime. Amarylis, and a succulent dish which I designed myself - a moom cactus, with Echevaria.

Two stalks of blooming red amaryllis.

A close up of the flower.

AMARYLLIS (naked lily) December 30, 2011.

i got amaryllis from trevor and vj for christmas. I have no experience with this bulb but it come with instructions. so, will, it is worth a try. any plant loves me, so this is another member of my family.

it is the variety red lion. red flowers in the window box, so it is put in its vase downstairs and hope it will show me flowers soon.

before i discard the kit, the instructions is here:

MAINTAINING AMARYLLIS BULBS:
Unlike most other bulbs, Amaryllis bulbs will bloom again and again, provided they are properly cared for.
  • after the bulb finishes blooming, cut off the flower stalk close to the base.
  • keep the plant moist and add houseplant fertilizer regularly. after the last frost, you can put the amaryllis outside in a sunny spot.
  • stop watering and feeding in August/September and allow the plant to dry out completely in the sun.
  • in early fall, remove bulb from soil and clean the bulbs of old scales and spent foliage.
  • re-pot in a clean container with the neck of the bulb above the soil, water and place in cool, sunny spot. water sparingly until the first sprout appears, then keep moist. In about 8 weeks, the bulb will bloom again.
i will add notes if these instruction works, and how i tweak ( as I am known as the mad scientist on plants) them to suit my needs.

Currently, I planted the Amaryllis in my basement. I have a garage light " a flourescent 48" hanging from the wall " in my laundry room. This is how this amaryllis is planted. It showed about 2" of sprout already.

Since 8 weeks is blooming time, approximately that will be February 24th, 2012 from today (12/30/2011).
  • UPDATE: Feb. 18, 2011. Probably the estimated date is close to when it flowers. I have two big stalks or red flowers, and very awesome. It was so heavy that it fall off on the side. I have to cut two big stalks and put em in two separate flower vase.

Kids Milestone for 2011 - A mothers perspective

Kenneth is 7 this year and he can count in his head. He said, you got
40 pokemon points, but I got 70 to destroy you, so...i got 30 points
left and i won! BTW, he is in grade 2 this year and he started
learning more French that I can imagine.

Karlina will be 3 on Feb. 2012. Her most important milestone being is
being able to wash dishes, by simply tossing them in the toilet bowl
and start flushing. She then bring the plate back in the kitchen and
says "clean". And the kettle is boiling to put the " clean" plate in for sterilizing.

Kieren can walk now, he will turn 2 in June 2012. He is good at
sweeping the floor and hitting my head with the broom too. He has one
kidney only according to CHEO, but Dr. Chadha said, his right kidney is there - but it is not functioning.
In God grace, he also eat very well. He drinks milk a
lot, which I am contemplating in getting a cow to have a ready source
of milk everyday.

What i am trying to say is that "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you".

Today, I stumbled upon Linus Torvalds Blog

this is my fulltime job, and it pays a lot!
if you count the number of diapers leaving my house each garbage day.

today, I stumbled upon Linus blog because I was trying to find reference for open source software.
http://torvalds-family.blogspot.com/

while i thought geek dom and blogging does not mix, Linus prove me wrong again.

And i dare comment on his post about mingling with the Hollywood stars. He describes how fun it is to be Linus and Tove around them. And then, I look back this post was way back in February....who cares!
http://torvalds-family.blogspot.com/2011/02/pearls-before-swine.html

And they got 3 kids?

So, 10 years must have pass, my old laptop still runs on Linux, the desktop runs on Ubuntu.

No, no, no, days before Ubuntu was bittersweet. I got no kids that time, and I worked on my pajamas. And the cleaning lady comes once a month to clean up after me. And Sega Dreamcast was a hit!

And who am I kidding? I still work on my pajamas, smeared with yogort, and I walk on cheerios each morning, while getting to the coffee maker.

Man...life happens so fast, eh?
This ain't an easy run, like running a marathon.

While I plan to do something else, like going to group fitness at Goodlife called Body Combat, I end up drifting in memory of 10 years back when I work on my pajama, and I call the cleaning lady once a month to clean my one bedroom apartment.

Now, in the day called "present", I am sorrounded by 3 kids, with boxes and gift wrappers from Christmas, and I lost the number of the cleaning lady.

So, I run around in circles, while what I was trying to do was find the number of the cleaning lady.

I stumbled on a post about Freecycle and Al Gore, and Ice Cream, and I thought gee....It was not Al Gore who invented the internet - someone named Tim Berners Lee, then I googled for reference. And I said, gee....Bill Gates got rich on that boom, I wonder how my pal Linus was doing...and here goes, I end up finding his blog on google.

The Earth must have been that perfect circle because I run around in circles and I end back in my living room dealing with the mess, with my daughter chasing my youngest son who is about to drop an apple to my aquarium to feed fishies! But then, it was jut last week when Karlina squirted a whole tube of toothpaste to Kenneth's aquarium upstairs because "fishy need to clean teeth".
